Happy BHM!

Black History Month

February is Black History Month! Here at AOPP, we celebrated with small things all month but this week, we went all out. We dedicated an entire week of activities for our kiddos.

Each day this week, we visit a different decade and learn one of the dances of that decade, then afterward, the classes participate in a Black History Month Craft. Monday, we visited the 1950s. The kiddos learned the Hand-Jive by James Brown and made paper plate baseballs in honor of Jackie Robinson. Yesterday, we visited the 1960s. The kiddos learned the Twist by Chubby Checker and made gold medals in honor of Wilma Rudolph. Today, we visited the 1970s and we taught the robot and bump by Michael Jackson and the Jackson 5. The craft today is to décor/color a jersey in honor of Bill Russell. Tomorrow they’ll learn the Running Man by MC Hammer and make microphones in honor of Oprah Winfrey. Friday, we’ll have a Black History Month movie day, and we’ll watch the Princess and the Frog.

This was and will be an awesome week. This will definitely be something we’ll continue to do for the future years to come.

Children's Dental Health Month

Toothbrush Painting

February is Children’s Dental Health Month, and we are celebrating the best way we know-how. CRAFTS!

Yesterday and today, we have done two fun things to keep our little ones in the know about their own dental health. Yesterday’s craft was toothbrush painting. All our friends were super excited about this craft. Even our little ones had a blast and knew exactly what a toothbrush was.

To add to the fun, today we had an experiment making elephant toothpaste for our classes. They were all so happy to see what would happen when we put all the ingredients into the bottle. This has to be one of the best experiments yet.

Yummy Pizza Lunch

 National Pizza Day

Today is National Pizza Day so we celebrated by eating one of America’s all-time favorite foods for lunch today!

Pizza is one of our favorite meals at the school. The kids absolutely, look forward to the days on the menu where we may have “Make your own pizza day” with English Muffins, shredded cheese, and pepperoni, or days where we just have square cheese pizza or if we have some yummy pizza rolls.

We had all three today and the kids had a blast! National Pizza Day is always a success.

Groundhog's Day Craft

Happy Groundhog’s Day

Today is Groundhog’s Day! Groundhog’s Day is a celebration in Pennsylvania where the groundhog, Punxsutawney Phil, determines whether spring will come early, or we will have six (6) more weeks of winter.

This morning, Phil emerged from his burrow and saw his shadow. So to celebrate, our friends did a craft we created Phil seeing his shadow.

We gave them small groundhogs to color, a black sheet of paper, some tape, and chalk. They started coloring their groundhogs, then we taped them to the black paper and used the chalk to create the shadow.

They had so much fun and were so happy to do this. Not sure how happy they are for six more weeks of winter though.
