Summer Reading

The Power of Reading

Reading is one of the greatest pleasures in life. It stimulates your mind, expands your imagination, becomes an outlet for creative thinking and so much more. The early years of a child's life are critical to developing a lifelong love of reading. It's never too early to begin reading to your child! The tips below offer some fun ways you can help your child becomes a happy and confident reader. Try a new tip each week. See what works best for your child.

Read Together Daily

Setting a normal schedule where you include reading together is a great way to show they the importance of routines and how reading is enjoyable to do.

Give Everything a Name

When your child points out objects name them, "That is a tree" "That's a motorcycle" It's a great way to not only engage with your child but to grow their vocabulary.

Express Your Love of Reading

When it is time for your daily reading ritual express how much you love and joy the activity. This will create the similar reaction in them.

Read With Fun in Your Voice

Never read in monotone, allow yourself to step into their shoes. Be silly, be creative, and have fun! Your child will see that and be excited in return.

Be Interactive

Act out your stories, don't be afraid to be the captain on the pirate ship looking for treasure or the  archaeologist digging up dinosaur bones. Reading is meant to be FUN!

Read it Over and Over Again

Repetition, books were made to be read more than once. If your child enjoys a particular book you need to them a 101 times, because it brings them joy.

Take Books Everywhere

Show your child that books aren't just for at school or at home before bed. They can read in the car, on an airplane or even at the store!

AYE AYE MATIES!

This week at The Academy of Powell Place we have had the wonderful experience to explore our senses and have the Blue Buccaneer come to visit us. We got to engage with a, friendly, pirate who has soared the high seas to bring us music along with his trusty first mate! While they were here they played us beautiful folk music and showed us how to do special dances! It was a joy  we will never forget and our friends wont stop talking about.

Sensory for Infants

One of the greatest gifts to give an infant is the gift of sensory play. Not only is this teaching them about the world around them. It's teaching them touch, sight, taste, smell, and sounds. This causes them to form cogitative connections in their brains. These connections, in turn, will develop and grow over the course of their young lives and help to shape them into who they become. Who would have thought that it all starts as an infant! So don't forget that even when we're playing, we're LEARNING!

PreK Boot Camp - Lunch Line Skills

Today we had so many excited friends to experience what a kindergarten cafeteria line will look like. They had a fun lesson with their teachers in the morning and got to put their new tips and tricks to the test by getting to try it for themselves during lunch. Not only were they polite to their lunch lady, Ms. Lynne, they also opened their carton of milk on their own, choose if they wanted condiments or not, and most importantly got to enjoy some yummy chicken nuggets!
